Safari Lodges and Camps Guide

A practical explanation of lodges, tented camps, luxury tented camps, mobile camps, resorts, and beach hotels so travellers can read lodging options more clearly.

  • Camp does not automatically mean rough camping
  • Location and wildlife movement matter more than the label
  • Beach stays such as Zanzibar can be added after safari

Start With the Common Stay Types

A lodge usually feels closer to a fixed-building stay, with stable room and public-area structures. A tented camp uses tented architecture, but many are not rough campsites; they can include proper beds, bathrooms, and full safari service.

A luxury tented camp places more emphasis on design, service, and privacy. A mobile camp is often more seasonal or movement-led, so comfort level and operating model need to be checked carefully.

  • Resorts and beach hotels are more common in coastal or island extensions, such as adding Zanzibar after safari.
  • The name alone does not prove quality. Location, service boundary, and fit with your pace matter more.

Inside Parks, Reserves, and Private Conservancies

Staying inside a national park often means closer access to park activity areas. Staying outside may offer more flexibility in transport, budget, or lodging choice. Reserves and private conservancies depend on their specific rules, fees, and activity boundaries.

When choosing lodging, do not rely only on photos and room names. Wildlife movement, access route, meals, rest time, driving distance, and budget should be considered together.

How to Discuss Lodging With an Advisor

When comparing stays, first explain what matters most: wildlife access, comfort, quietness, meals, child comfort, rest for older travellers, or budget control. This helps an advisor decide whether location, comfort, or balance should lead.
